ACNE

Acne is a skin condition characterized by the clogging and inflammation of hair follicles and sebaceous glands, often due to excess oil, dead skin cells, and bacterial buildup. It manifests as pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, or cysts, commonly affecting the face, chest, and back. Acne can occur at any age but is most prevalent during puberty and can vary in severity.

Acne affects about 85% of people aged 12-24, making it one of the most common skin conditions globally. While it is often associated with puberty, adults in their 30s, 40s, and even 50s can also experience acne due to hormonal changes, stress, or other factors.

What are the causes?

Hormonal Fluctuations.

Changes in hormone levels, such as those that occur during puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, or stress, can trigger the sebaceous glands to produce more oil. This excess oil can clog pores, leading to acne breakouts.

Heredity

Genetics also play a significant role in the development of acne. If your parents had acne, you're more likely to experience it as well. Certain genes can make your sebaceous glands more prone to overproducing oil, increasing the likelihood of clogged pores and acne.

Medication

Certain medications can trigger or worsen acne as a side effect. Drugs such as corticosteroids, lithium, and some anticonvulsants can increase oil production or cause skin reactions that lead to breakouts. If you suspect your medication is contributing to acne, it's important to consult a healthcare provider.

Stress

Stress can contribute to acne by triggering hormonal changes, particularly an increase in cortisol levels. Cortisol, known as the stress hormone, can stimulate sebaceous glands to produce more oil, leading to clogged pores and acne breakouts.

Cosmetic Products

Using cosmetics or skincare products that are not non-comedogenic (i.e., products that clog pores) can contribute to acne. This includes certain makeup, sunscreens, or hair care products that may contain pore-clogging ingredients.

Diet

Consuming high-glycemic foods, such as sugary snacks and processed carbs, along with dairy products, can increase acne in some individuals. These foods may trigger insulin and hormone production, which can lead to increased oil production and clogged pores.
